About Hidden Joey

Each round shows three words, but only one truly hides its joey; the other two are decoys. You tap letters from left to right to spell the hidden word, misses use up your tries, and free hints reveal the joey's length, rule out a decoy and then give a meaning clue. On some days the twist is an opposite instead, as in COVERT hiding OVERT.

Every round ends with the word's actual etymology and a verdict on whether the pair is a true cognate or a coincidence, and the facts you earn are collected as you play. It's a neat daily for word nerds and etymology fans, and it's built to play one-thumbed on a phone.
